Elsenham is a small village in North West Essex. Its neighbouring towns include Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden, and Stansted Mountfitchet. The village is approximately 3 miles from Stansted Airport. The village has one pub called The Crown, located on the junction of Elsenham Cross. A small row of shops on the high street includes a One Stop convenience store, a hairdressers and a small post office. The village church is St. Mary the Virgin, located on Lane Hall Road. Leisure facilities include the Elsenham Golf Centre. Nearby Stansted Mountfitchet, is a small historic town dating from Saxon times. There are numerous 16th and 17th century buildings and a well-preserved windmill built in 1787. Under the Normans, Stansted passed to the Mountfitchet family who built a timber castle here - the extensive earthworks are now home to a reconstructed motte and bailey structure. The market town of Bishop’s Stortford is just 5 miles away and serves as a common ground for shopping and entertainment facilities. The picturesque medieval town of Saffron Walden is 9 miles away and has some 400 buildings of special architectural or historic interest, including Audley End House and Gardens and the ruins of the 12th century Walden Castle.
