Elmstead Market is a village in the Tendring district of Essex, five miles south east of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, with its castle, museum and many places of interest. Within easy reach are beautiful areas such as Frinton, Dedham and Maldon. Dedham Vale is an area of outstanding natural beauty and the setting for many of the paintings of John Constable. There is a nature reserve at nearby Fingrinhoe. Elmstead Market Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Lawrence. The Beth Chatto Gardens lie just outside the village. Started by gardener and writer Beth Chatto, the gardens began in 1960. From an overgrown wasteland with poor gravel soil and boggy hollows it has been transformed into an informal garden harmonising with the surrounding countryside. Complementing the gardens is a large retail nursery producing a wide range of plants, the majority of which can be seen growing in the gardens Nearby Wivenhoe Park, is a multi-acre landscaped green space. Most famous as the subject of one of Constable’s landscape paintings, from the '60s onwards, however, it has been home to the University of Essex. The village itself has a Community Centre with a range of activities on offer.
