Broxted is a village and civil parish in Essex, located 7 miles northeast of Bishop's Stortford, 15 miles northwest from the county town of Chelmsford. Broxted forms part of The Five Parishes with Chickney and Tilty, and Great Easton and Little Easton. The Five Parishes is found amidst beautiful scenery and local attractions include the Gardens of Little Easton Lodge and Little Easton Manor. Many local gardens are open for visits on occasion too, and there are a number of walks and many public footpaths. Pubs include The Stag at Lt.Easton, The Swan at Gt. Easton and The Three Horseshoes on Duton Hill. Nearby Lindsell Art Gallery shows paintings and prints by artists from Essex or East Anglia. Dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, Broxted church occupies an ancient Celtic site and the present 12th and 13th century building incorporates a part of a Saxon structure. The whole church was heavily restored in 1876. St Mary’s Church stain glass window project was completed in 1993. It was designed and made to mark the captivity and freedom of the Beirut Hostages as John McCarthy was brought up in Broxted. The Window of Captivity and the Window of Freedom symbolise the hostages’ ordeal.
