Tetbury is a market town in the southern Cotswolds, situated between Cirencester and Bath. The first recorded history of the town was in 681 referring to a well established Saxon Monastery, during the middle ages Tetbury's prosperity grew through the stapling of wool - that is buying and selling. In 1655 the Market House was built for the storage and selling of wool, it is a fine example of a pillared market house and stands prominently in the centre of the town.
When the industrial revolution came so did the decline in Tetbury's wealth, lack of permanently running water meant the mills went to the valleys, fortunately Tetbury's many fine town houses were left untouched. The Parish church of St Mary the Virgin is a fine example of gothic revival architecture, built in 1781 to replace a medieval church, the spire being left untouched. The soaring 186ft spire was rebuilt in the 1890s, William Hamilton Yatman of nearby Highgrove House paid for the rebuilding of the spire in memory of his son, with the condition that he could have unobstructed views of the spire from the front of Highgrove House, this is still true today.
Chipping (Meaning market) Steps with its weaver's cottages is a delightful area of the town and many of the old houses are built on medieval origins. It was here at the Malt House that the models for the D-day landing at Omaha Beach were made.
The Tetbury Police Museum is situated in the former Police Station and Magistrates Court at the bottom of Long Street and welcomes visitors during the weekdays; a small fascinating museum partly set in the original cells.
Tetbury has many antique shops and places to eat and is an ideal place to stay with easy access to the countryside. Population 6,000
