Slad village, 2 miles north east of Stroud, lies in a beautiful valley of the Slad Brook amid the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. The village originated at Steanbridge, an important crossing of the Slad brook, first recorded in 1353 when it carried the Painswick to Cirencester road. the oldest part of Slad is situated on the slopes of the valley south of the bridge and east of the Stroud to Cheltenham road (now the B4070). The building of this road in 1800 encouraged development; by 1820 there were four or five cottages on the west side of the road, the church and school (1838) were built at the south end of the village, again on the west side. A public house - The Woolpack - was built opposite at about the same time. A Congregational Chapel was built a little to the north of the church in 1867 (now converted into a holiday let) and scattered houses have been built along the main road since the late 19th century. The church - Holy Trinity - of 1834 was designed by Charles Baker of Painswick and consisted of a chancel and nave, a north aisle and porch were added by Benjamin Bucknell in 1869. Slad`s most famous resident was the poet and author Laurie Lee who based his book "Cider with Rosie" on his own life in and around the village; he was a regular at the Woolpack and is buried in the churchyard.
