Situated at the western end of the Cotswolds is the town of Painswick, 3 miles (5k) north of Stroud and 6 miles (10k) southeast of Gloucester, the town is over looked by Painswick Beacon where the remains of an Iron Age encampment may be found. Around the time of the Domesday Book (1086) it was known as Wyke (from the Old English "wic" = dwelling place"), the Pain was added in the 12th century, possibly after Pain FitzJohn who was the Losr of the Manor. In 1253 Painswick was granted a charte to hold a weekly market, Painswicks prosperity grew, mostly around the cloth making industury, and some 19 mills have been identified along the banks of the Painswick Stream and its tribitaries; although not all were dedicated to cloth making. The population grew and the availability of local stone has left the town a rich heritage of 17th, 18th and 19th century buildings none more so than Painswick House built in 1735 by Charles Hyett, it is home to the unique Rococo Gardens. The churchyard of the 14th century St.Marys church is home to, supposedly, 99 yew trees the Devil, so legend has it, will not permit the one hundreth to grow. The increase in the use of steam power and better sited mills elaewere lead to a decline in the fourtunes of the town. However, it had become a favoured residential area for retired and professional people working in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud; Painswick had become one of the first "Commuter" towns.
