11 miles east of Cirencester, in the extreme southeast of the county, and where the Rivers Coln and Leach flow into the River Thames sits the ancient market town of Lechlade. Lying close to where the three counties of Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire meet with Gloucestershire, Lechlade marks the turning point for large river craft (the river becomes too shallow a little way beyond the town). A borough and market town from the thirteenth century the town prospered from the wool trade of the Cotswolds, it served as a staging point for the transportation of wool and other goods. The town is built primarily of local stone and the centre of town has many fine buildings, many by a local architect-builder called Pace such as the Old Vicarage. There are two fine Bridges; St.John`s, said to be the first stone bridge across the Thames outside London dating from 1228 ans the 18th century Halfpenny Bridge (pronounced "Ha`penny") still with it`s toll house forming part of the eastern parapet. The Trout Inn, standing near St.Johns Bridge, was known as the St.John the Baptists Head until 1704 and was probably once a guest house for the Priory that once stood nearby. The Swan Inn dates back to 1520 and it was from here that stage-coaches ran to London. The church of St.Lawrence towers over the Market Square, built in 1473 in the Perpendicular style it replaced an earlier Norman church. Lechlade has a quiet and peaceful atmosphere, many pleasant walks are to be found, perhaps along the Thames to see "Old Father Thames" at St.Johns lock, or just to browse around the town`s many antique shops .
