The old market town of Dursley (7miles southwest of Stroud) lies at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment in the Cam-Ewelme valley. The beech covered hills rise to 718 feet (219m) to Stinchcome Hill where spectacular views over the Vale of Berkeley and the River Seven are to be enjoyed. Granted Borough status in 1471 the town developed as a wool manufacturing centre (with 7 mills in the town by the 19th century) but it`s central location made it the market centre for the whole of the Vale of Berkeley. Dursley`s most distinctive building is the Market House, built by the Estcourt family - whose Coat of Arms are to be found on the south side - the upper floors are stand on pillars, the east face has a statue if Queen Anne looking out over the old market square. Now the Town Hall it once served as a cheese and butter market.The church of St.James is medieval in origin but has been restored and repaired over the centuries, a large part is built using Tufa stone that is quarried locally. The tower was rebuilt in 1709 following the collapse of the spire on top of some unfortunate bell-ringers. other buildings of interest in Dursley are; The Priory; the Chantry once home of the local Chantry priests; the old Weavers House re-named Jacob`s House and now part of the Heritage Centre, and the National School of 1833 now used as St.Jame`s Parish Centre. Dursley was the home of the Dursley Pedersen Safety Bicycle invented by Mikael Pedersen and manufactured in the late 19th & early 20th centuries; and of course to the world famous Lister Stationary Engines made in the town for over 140 years. Demolition in the 1950/60`s lead to a loss of some of some fine buildings but, as with the new library and Heritage Centre, Dursley still has much to enjoy.
