The small, peaceful village Churcham lies just off the old Roman road that ran from Gloucester to Ross-on-Wye, now the A40, five miles east of Gloucester. Once known Ham & Morton it was changed to Churcham just after the church was built around 1100, but the name reflected the ownership of the manor by the monks at Gloucester Abbey. In the mid 11th century Wolphin de Rue had to give to Gloucester Abby part of his estate as punishment for killing several monks of the Abbey! Although it is recorded the the Saxon noble Ethelmund had granted lands, that may have included Churcham, to the Bishop of Hereford in 780. The church of St.Andrew`s has an aisleless nave, chancel, south porch and a west tower; the tower and nave are basically Norman but the Church underwent a major restoration in 1878 following a serious fire in 1875. An unusual spire, a copy of the spire at Sompting (Sussex), was added as part of the re-build. The carved figure above the north doorway is a 3rd century Romano-British sculpture installed when the church was first built and on the south doorway arch can be seen the remains of 12th/13th century wall paintings. In the churchyard is the grave of Henry Hook VC one of the soldiers who won the Victoria Cross at the battle of Rorke`s Drift. To the north of Churcham in Highnam Wood, extensively replanted in 1798/99, they contain a Pinetum - a collection of conifers - started by Thomas Parry in 1844 along with its historic Victorian Hunting Lodge that was re-built in the rustic style in 1868. Set in fine agricultural land farming was, and is still is, the mainstay of this fine rural village.
