Situated only two miles to the east of Gloucester, Barnwood managed to retain its rural character until the late 19th century. The village of Barnwood had developed along Ermin Street, the old Roman Road that linked Gloucester with Oxford and London. The village developed along the Street and by the late 18th century there were about 35 houses in the main part of Barnwood, many with their own small orchards and small holdings. There was an ale house, the Salutation, which closed in 1817 and another that had closed by 1807; the village blacksmith ran a beer shop in the 1850`s!!! Development in the mid 19th century saw many of the older dwellings replaced by houses and villas. A charity school had been founded in the early 18th century, this was replaced by a National school in 1874. The church of St Lawrence was build in the 13th century the chapel and tower being added in the 16th C, major refurbishment and re-building was undertaken in the 1850`s and again in 1873/4. In 1860 the Gloucester Asylum Trust brought Barnwood House, and early 19th century house and converted it into a private asylum, Barnwood House Hospital, it became one of the leading Hospitals dealing with mental health problems in the country. By the 1980`s, with increasing costs and improvements elsewhere the Hospital closed, but the house still retains its links with mental health care, the Barnwood House Trust is an independent charity catering for the needs of those with serious physical and mental disabilities. The former gardens have been transformed into the award winning Barnwood Arboretum, opened by Queen Elizabeth in June 2002, it is a designated nature reserve and has been awarded the "Green Flag Award" in 2005 and 2007. Parts of the parish of Barnwood were taken into Gloucester in 1874 when the city boundary was extended, further chunks were taken until 1967 when Barnwood became completely absorbed into Gloucester
