First noted in the Domesday Book the village of Twyford in Hampshire takes its name from being located between two fords (Twyforde) and is to be found just south of the City of Winchester with easy access to the M3 motorway and with the typical rolling Hampshire countryside on its doorstep. A settlement has existed here since Saxon Times as the church is mentioned in the Domesday Book, it was subsequently rebuilt by the Normans, and again in the Victorian period, the Norman detailing though is still evident in the present church today. The churchyard has what is reputedly the oldest yew tree in the country, it is said to be around 1,000 years old! Today Twyford is a compact village boasting a local school, village shop and Post Office together with a range of local stores and two local parks. It is a ramblers delight with numerous footpaths and water meadows ,which are all either held in trust or protected from development. Just to the east of Twyford is an interesting feature, a Victorian reservoir which functioned as such until 1962 and then in 1990 it became a nuclear bunker used to house around 30 government officials, it was decommissioned in 1997.
