Newtown is a tiny hamlet within the parish of Sherfield English in the county of Hampshire, 5 miles from the town of Romsey. A network of footpaths can be accessed from Newtown leading to local villages and pubs. Dunwood Golf Course is within walking distance. The 600 year old Knightwood Oak, the largest in the New Forest and known as the Queen of the Trees, is close by and can be visited by taking the Ornamental drive. Sherfield English is a small village along the A27, Romsey to Salisbury road, with a church, the Hatchet Inn, a village hall, and a garage. Many of its cottages and isolated farms are located down narrow, winding lands. St Leonard's Church is the second one on this site, built in 1902 by Lady Caroline Ashburton in memory of her daughter. It houses some fine art nouveau style stained glass windows, the old village stocks, a 13th century coffin and various old carvings. Romsey lies on the River Test and is one of the principal towns in the Test Valley. A large Norman abbey dominates the centre of the town. Lord Palmerston was born and lived at Broadlands, a large country estate on the outskirts of the town. His statue stands in the Market Place outside the Town Hall.
