Ware is a small town that has been central in many ages, dating back to prehistoric times of the Bronze Age and Iron Age and being prominent in, Saxon, Norman and Roman Britain, the town in those times was larger/wealthier than Hertford, which overshadows it now. Based near the River Lea, the Lea Navigation Canal and on the Roman Ermine Street, the town had many coaching inns and was the perfect location for the 17th century malting industry that dominated life, the last of which closed in 1994. There are still many inns (The Old Bulls Head has live music every Saturday night), malt houses and industry (now served by the A10 and rail links). There is no shortage of accommodation, cafes, restaurants or takeaways either and there’s a festival held annually in July. The River Lea provides fishing, pleasure cruising and is a main cycle route to Stansted Abbotts, the other route being along the old railway line towards Welwyn Garden City. Tucked away in amongst modern housing is a house made of shells – Scotts Grotto. It is the largest grotto in the UK and was restored to grandeur in 1990. It is open to the public every Saturday afternoon from April to September. Another historic treasure is Ware Priory, founded in 1338, a Grade 1 listed building that was granted a license for civil marriage ceremonies in 1995 and is open daily
