Confusingly there are actually 2 Knebworths – one being about a mile from the other which has grown up around the famous stately home. Both villages are situated in North Hertfordshire, between Stevenage and Welwyn and are served by the A1M and the railway network which resulted in major expansion in the area when it first arrived in 1884. There is evidence of inhabiants here from Neolithic times, the place is mentioned in the Doomsday Book and was the site of one of the first Saxon settlements. The gothic mansion and park have been home to the Lytton family for over 500 years. The Lyttons are famous for various reasons – with connections to individuals such as Charles Dickens and Sir Winston Churchill. However of particular prominence is Lady Constance Lytton (& her siblings) who was a key fighter for the suffragette movement and helped get the vote for women over 30 in 1918. Another notable Lytton is Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton, who famously wrote "The pen is mightier than the sword". Knebworth House is open to visitors every day in summer, with access to the house, gardens and picnic areas. The grounds have hosted many large pop concerts since 1974. There is also a golf course to the north of the main village dating from 1908. It has seen many changes and currently has an 18-hole par 71 course. The pubs of the villages are historic themselves, The Lytton Arms is Victorian and the Station Hotel was built in 1883 and there is also a wealth of places to stay in nearby Stevenage.
