In-between Hemel Hempstead and Watford, near the M25 viaduct across the River Gade valley and on the edge of the Chiltern Hills is the village of Kings Langley. The village boasts a phenomenal history, from Roman settlement origins to being the site of a fourteenth century palace used by the Plantagenet kings of England, hence the name Kings and incredible transport connections. Also, The Rudolf Steiner School opened in 1949 and is one of the longest-established Steiner Waldorf schools in the UK. Kings Langley was the home of Ovaltine but the imposing factory facade is now all that is left. The former Ovaltine Egg Farm was incorporated into an eco friendly energy efficient office suite in 2004, with a highly visible wind turbine, illuminated at Christmas. The Grand Union canal and the West Coast Main Line railway pass on the east side, however, the canal has been and still is fundamental in bringing trade to the village and there is a railway station. The lock keepers cottage is charming, functional and the lock sequence provides an interesting walk along towpaths. There are 2 large hotels in the village, a Premier Travel Inn and the more elaborate De Vere Hunton Park, being a mansion house hotel set in 22acres of gorgeous gardens.
