Just off the A10 in the North-east of Hertfordshire is the small market town of Buntingford. This is a good base for the county, not far from the M11 and 20 miles from Stansted Airport, with “Herts Way” walk passing through. These valuable access links make the area popular with commuters too. There is a host of historic buildings, largely Georgian and medieval, due mainly to Buntingford’s location on the River Rib and a Roman main road (Ermine Street) meaning it was an ideal stopping place with numerous coaching inns. There is even a one-cell prison (The Cage) still remaining from the 18th century, along with almshouses and the Manor House. The Anglican Church is intriguing and dates from Norman Puritans in the 17th century. Apparently Queen Elizabeth I stayed here aswell in the Bellhouse (now a gallery), on a coach journey to Cambridge. There remain a multitude of pubs, serving real ale & often food, eg. Brunels or The Blind Fiddler. There are restaurants ranging from Chinese and Thai to Indian and bistros. B&B accommodation is on offer at Anstey Grove Barn and Chipping Hall. Market day is Monday and early closing on Wednesdays. The Buntingford Carnival is held every other year. At the Buntingford Classic (held on the first Saturday in September each year) classics and interesting vehicles fill the streets and live musical performances go on throughout the day.
