Baldock is situated in the very north of Hertfordshire, where the River Ivel rises and near the A1M. With a population of under 10,000 it is a small town but with much to offer. Originally the site of both Iron Age and Roman settlements, important in the stagecoach era as it was the first main stopping place on the Great North Road when heading out of London. These factors strongly influenced the town and still exist today in making a pleasant town, retaining many 16th to 18th century buildings, including St Mary’s church tower (the rest of the building is 13th century). There is a museum charting the town’s history, from its foundation by the Knights Templar in 1250 and the rumoured crusades, to the present day and the benefit from the recent opening of the by-pass in 2006. Letchworth Garden City neighbours, which explains why Baldock has so many pubs/restaurants – Garden Cities were Quaker-lead, therefore not permitting alcohol sales and so all visitors to Letchworth turned to Baldock and it’s many inns for refreshment! There are still many places to eat, drink and stay, with sufficient free parking. These days the town is a relatively quiet place due to the by-pass, which has also resulted in fewer businesses trading from there, so it is really a commuter town now. There is a festival for two weeks each May, a large community event of low-cost entertainment bringing everyone together.
