West Malling used to be known as Town Malling and is a historic market town in Kent, 35 miles from London. St Mary’s Abbey in Swan Street was founded around 1090 and is still occupied by Anglican Benedictine nuns. The true scene of a painting by artist JMW Turner was recently discovered as being that of St Mary's Abbey. St Leonard's tower was built around 1080 by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, and is a fine early example of a Norman tower keep. The High Street is lined on both sides with some fine Tudor, Jacobean and Georgian houses such as Ford House and Prior House on King Street. The town has specialist shops and several bars and restaurants on its High Street. The Swan, originally an 18th century coaching inn, stands on Swan Street. Just outside the village is Manor Country Park and opposite it Douce’s Manor, a developed 18th century manor house. The Beatles were once owners of Douce's Manor and in 1967 The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour was filmed around West Malling. A number of airshows used to take place at West Malling Airfield until it was sold and developed into the ‘designer’ business park and housing estate, Kings Hill.
