Strood stands on the northern banks of the River Medway at its lowest bridging point, looking across the water to Rochester's magnificent Norman castle and cathedral - the second oldest in England. Although Strood is now a largely residential district, its history goes back to Roman times and its development was very much allied to the river, with a variety of businesses and industries springing up during the 1800s to cater for the nearby Chatham Dockyard. Nowadays, thanks to excellent road and rail links to London, Strood is popular as a commuter town. Its shopping streets feature a combination of familiar chain stores and independent shops, and it also offers a small retail park and a twice-weekly traditional market in the town centre, attracting customers from all over the Medway area. There's fun for all the family at Strood Leisure Centre, which has swimming pools, a gym, a sauna and steam room, and a football area, and at Medway Valley Park, a riverside entertainment centre. This bustling complex hosts a multiplex cinema, several restaurants, a nightclub and a leisure centre. Nearby, the Diggerland adventure park gives children and adults an action-packed experience, driving and riding in dumper trucks and diggers.
