Sheerness is a commercial port and the main town on the Isle of Sheppey, off the northern coast of Kent in the Thames Estuary. Originally a separate island but the channels, which separate it from the mainland, have since silted up. The town owes much to its origins as a Royal Naval Dockyard town. Established by Samuel Pepys on behalf of the Admiralty in the 17th century to repair and build warships, King Henry VIII, requiring the River Medway as anchorage for his navy, ordered a garrison fort as protection. In 1667 the Dutch navy attacked, forced the little fort to surrender and for a short time, occupied the town. In the 19th century, a pier and promenade were constructed and Sheerness became a seaside resort although industry was and still an important part of the town. The dockyard served the Royal Navy until 1960 and has since developed into one of the largest and fastest expanding ports in the UK. The dockyard and fort remain to this day invaluable contributors to the Sheppey economy, including a large steelworks with extensive railway as well as mass import and export of motor vehicles and fresh produce, although these industries are not as extensive as they once were.
