The name Sevenoaks originates from the Saxon word “Seouenaca” and was given to a small chapel near seven oaks on a knoll, or high ground, in 800AD. Historically part of the Great Manor of Otford, held by the Archbishops of Canterbury, it is the neighboring village of Otford, rather than Sevenoaks that is mentioned in the Doomsday Book and it is in Otford that one of Archbishop Lanfrac’s manors was built. Sevenoaks only grew in importance in the 13th century when the two main roads from London and Dartford merged into one main route which headed south to the coast, providing an ideal location for a market and Sevenoaks has remained a market town to this day. At the junction of Tonbridge Road and Solefields Road there is a plaque to commemorate the victory of Jack Cade when he led the rebellion against Henry VI and defeated the king’s troops in the Battle of Solefields in 1450. In 1456, the then Archbishop of Canterbury purchased the 100-acre estate of Knole and built the great house, later appropriated by Henry VII, who passed it on to Queen Elizabeth I who in turn gave it to her cousin, Thomas Sackville. During the Civil War, Lord Sackville was arrested and the house searched although the nearest battle was at Tonbridge where the loyalists were defeated. In 1862 the town became a fashionable place for London commuters to live when the railway was built. The seven oaks have been replaced several times, as the life of an oak tree is around 250 years. The current seven oaks are on the northern side of the Vine cricket ground, one of the oldest in England and were planted in 1902 to commemorate the Coronation of King Edward VII. During the hurricane of 1987 however, six of these were blown down but for some reason, another seven were planted so that there are now eight oaks.
