Situated on the south-eastern tip of Kent, the Isle of Thanet covers an area of approximately 30 square miles. Its three principal resorts - Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate - have been welcoming visitors for generations.
The beaches of Margate made it one of the first seaside resorts in Britain and all the traditional pleasure from sandcastles to donkey rides are still on offer. Margate is home to Dreamland Fun Park, the largest coastal leisure complex in the South of England. The park’s 1,000 metre rollercoaster, opened in 1921, is the UK’s oldest operating wooden scenic railway.
The nautical theme continues at Ramsgate as you pass the time watching fishermen land their daily catch or enjoy a boat cruise along the coast. The beautiful Royal Harbour and marina, with its pubs, pavement cafés and newly restored steam tug Cervia all sparkle on the seafront - focus of a stunning £90 million rejuvenation.
But it’s not just on the coast that a visitor will find delights. Many of the ancient villages that dot the island offer their own unique attractions. Among them are the majestic Quex House and Powell-Cotton Museum in Birchington, with its 500 African and Asian mammals on display, Minster’s Rural Craft Museum and Workshops, the Windmill and Animal Farm at Sarre and the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Pavilion and Manston.
The new Thanet Way brings all this within an hour of the M2 and M25. The Isle of Thanet is easy to get to and fun when you’re here. Add in direct train links and the pleasures of a visit to this glorious corner of England have never been greater, or easier to access. Population 38,000
