Pluckley is a village in the Ashford District of Kent, located close to the North Downs and on the long distance walking route, the Greensand Way. Pluckley has two particular claims to fame: the drama series, The Darling Buds of May, was filmed there, based on the novel by H E Bates who lived nearby; and it is said to be the most haunted village in Britain. It is reputed to have at least 12 ghosts who have been known to appear at various locations and buildings around the village such as Fright Corner, the Screaming Woods, St Nicholas’ Church and The Black Horse Inn. The village holds halloween celebrations every year, attracting a host of visitors. Pluckley was also featured on an episode of BBC's 'Top Gear' when two of the presenters supposedly spent 24 hours sleeping in a car park in the Screaming Woods. Pluckley has several pubs serving food, The Black Horse, built in 1450 and popular with the visiting ghost hunters, The 'The Mundy Bois' dating from 1780, with views of the church on the hill, and The Dering Arms, a former hunting lodge for the prominent Dering family in the 1840's, once connected by underground passages to other parts of their estate.
