Hythe, in company with Dover, Sandwich, New Romney and Hastings, was one of the original Cinque Ports - an ancient federation of towns which received money and privileges in exchange for supplying ships and sailors to defend the coastline. Today, Hythe has neither port nor harbour to commemorate this history: an accumulation of silt and shingle in the Middle Ages effectively separated it from the sea. Building began to climb up the cliffside, and some lovely little streets now look out over the beach, the bay and the Channel. The striking Norman church of St Leonard's, with its macabre collection of human bones, dominates the hill while, below, the main shopping and entertainment area is quaint and lively. Hythe, situated on the eastern rim of Romney Marsh, sees the beginning of the 23-mile Royal Military Canal, a tranquil location for fishing, canoeing, cycling and walking. Walkers can also explore trails through wonderful scenery at the nearby Brockhill Country Park. The Romney, Hythe & Dimchurch Railway offers an equally delightful experience, its miniature steam and diesel trains trundling from Hythe to the strangely desolate Dungeness. Other local attractions include Saltwood and Lympne castles and Port Lympne Animal Park, Mansion and Gardens.
