Fondly described as "the capital of the Weald of Kent", the small market town of Cranbrook retains the pretty, medieval character of its past. To wander through the winding streets and alleyways lined with a jumble of buildings dating back to the 15th Century is to be transported into a bygone era. Cranbrook is a place where, at various times, Elizabeth 1 put her feet up at the George Inn (now a chic hotel), suspected witches were marched off for hanging, smugglers ruled the roost and Daniel Defoe reputedly wrote "Robinson Crusoe". In the late 1800s, the town was home to the "Cranbrook Colony", a group of artists including JC Horsley, who allegedly invented the Christmas card. From ancient timber-framed houses to the white, weatherboarded dwellings so typical of the Kentish countryside, from its farmlands to bountiful orchards, the atmosphere of Cranbrook today is that of an old town incorporating modern life peacefully and on its own terms. Its most famous landmark is Union Mill, the UK's second-tallest windmill, whose summit offers fabulous views over the countryside. Cranbrook is also a base for excellent dining, fine specialist shops, a local history museum, galleries, sports and, nearby, the world-famous Sissinghurst Gardens
