From its humble beginnings as a tiny roadside village called Bexley New Town in a heathland area notorious for highwaymen, Bexleyheath has grown into an important centre for shopping and entertainment, situated on the border of Kent and Greater London. The residents of its tree-lined streets enjoy their proximity to stores and malls, cinema, a sports complex, a tenpin bowling alley, a golf club and a number of scenic parks. The most beautiful is undoubtedly the 180-acre Danson Park, which offers both historic and contemporary attractions. Sporting facilities in the park include football, tennis, putting, bowling, orienteering and cycling, while its spectacular lake allows for fishing, rowing, boating and other water-based activities. A 200-year-old oak tree stands proudly amid the landscaped grounds, which at one time formed a private estate surrounding Danson Mansion. This fine 18th Century Palladian house, a Grade I-listed building, is open to visitors. Not far away is Red House, a magnificent Victorian Gothic building with many original features and pieces of furniture. A good base for day trips, Bexleyheath is close to the countryside and has fast links to London by train and road. It's only 15 minutes' drive from Bluewater, Europe's largest shopping centre.
