For those of you who enjoy skiing then Rawtenstall may already be well known as it has one of the best dry ski slopes in the country boasting three ski slopes. Rossendale hasn’t always enjoyed such a “clean” reputation for this town’s wealth was founded in the 18th and 19th centuries on that most well known of Lancashire industries – textiles. In the mid 14th century this area was part of the Royal Forest of Rossendale, an area set aside for the monarch usually to pursue their favoured sport of hunting. The anomaly here is that because Rawtensall is in the centre of the steep sided valley of the River Irwell then there is little by way of forest. Ratwenstall though remained very much a small village until the 18th century when, because of its unique location in terms of climate and weather as well as proximity to the river it soon became the favoured location for the production of cotton form its many mills. Today there are no working mills and only a few survive having been put to alternate uses. The town of Rawtenstall is very much considered to be a dormitory area lying at the end of the M66 which in turn leads to the major north west motorway network, but for the visitor, lying as it does in the centre of the Irwell Valley, Rawtenstall represents an excellent location from where the surrounding countryside can be visited and appreciated.
