Lying close to the River Calder in the North of England in the County of Lancashire is the small village of Oakenclough. This small scattered community lies open to the elements in this lofty and exposed location that is ideal for those who want to take advantage of the surrounding countryside. The village of Oakenclough grew up because of one man’s vision – admittedly flawed -nonetheless one Richard Curtis thought that this location, close to the River Calder would be the ideal location for building a paper mill. The houses that are now scattered around the area were built to house the local workers, but by 1827 Curtis’ dream was shattered when he went bankrupt. The houses and residents though remained and eventually the mill was purchased by John Jackson who went on to build the adjacent house, Calder Bank. Today the mill itself is used by a number of small businesses. Set in the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding natural Beauty, this provides an excellent location for walkers and ramblers who wish to explore the area.
