Mellor is an extensive village spreading along a ridge via several lanes in the hills above Blackburn, running into its subsidiary settlement of Mellor Brook, with the Ribble Valley just a short distance north of the place. The A59 runs to one side of the village and the A677 the other, providing easy routes to Preston and to Clitheroe. The residents of Mellor tend towards the prosperous, many of them middle aged and quite a few retired, that profile perhaps explaining how with a population of about 1500 it manages to support three pubs. It also has a village post office and small general store along with several other shops, with of course Blackburn nearby for more extensive retail amenities, and it has a GP’s surgery, a village hall and even a small library. There are plenty of grey stone cottages in evidence in Mellor, and a few solid old farmhouses, and even at the farthest extent of the settlement a manor house now converted into a rather grand hilltop hotel. In the distant past this was a Roman hill station guarding a military road. More recently Mellor was a small textile centre in its own right, and had several quarries, but these days residents are likely to work in the larger settlements nearby, or possibly at BAe in Samlesbury.
