Located on the popular Fylde coast of Lancashire, Lytham is a close neighbour to Blackpool and where Blackpool is….. well…… Blackpool; Lytham is the more genteel. It is a favourite of those who are more mature in years and it offers a relatively peaceful seaside resort that is not as commercially developed as its neighbour. Lytham can trace its history back to Anglo-Saxon Times but it wasn’t until the 1790’s that saw Lytham virtually abandon its familiar fishing and farming background to becoming a health resort. To the west end of Lytham Manor which was part of Lytham Hall (still standing today as a magnificent Georgian building) in around the late 1800’s the new town of St Annes on Sea was built – today their boundaries have all but merged and the area is known as Lytham St Annes. For the visitor there are miles of sandy beaches to enjoy, the historic Lytham Hall, built for the Clifton family in 1757 on the site of the former Jacobean hall that had stood since 1605. The windmill at Lytham is close to the seafront at Lytham Green this was a working mill until 1919 and today houses a museum. Those who prefer a round of golf to a round of shopping in the quaint local shops are rewarded with four championship golf courses to enjoy whilst for those who prefer to take the sea air in a more traditional manner there is Lytham’s Victorian pier stretching out into the sea with some great views. Families enjoy this resort both as residents and visitors alike, small children can play safely on the sands as the tides ebb and flow at a relaxed pace, nearby there are plenty of facilities and you may even still find a traditional donkey ride. There are plenty of more athletic amenities available with the Fairhaven Lake providing a variety of watersports including motor boats and water skiing.
