Kirkby Lonsdale is a historic market town just inside the south east boundary of Cumbria, on the River Lune. This market town has some lovely riverside and country walks and is set in the lush Lune Valley between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The view of the river from St. Mary’s churchyard prompted Victorian artist and critic John Ruskin to describe the landscape as some of the loveliest in the country. It became known as Ruskin’s View and inspired a famous painting by Turner. It is also the famed location of the Devil’s Bridge - a beautiful three-arched 14th Century bridge that spans the River Lune near Kirkby Lonsdale, and is one of the most photographed bridges in the North of England. Named the Devil’s Bridge because it was built by Satan himself! Today visitors can enjoy the surrounding countryside and views alternately they can spend time wandering the shops of Kirby Lonsdale – for a town with a populations of around 2,000 people the town centre boasts around 60 shops. In the 13th Century Kirby Lonsdale was granted a charter to hold fairs and nowadays Thursday is market day and the original medieval market cross can be seen in Horsemarket. There is so much to see and do in Kirby Lonsdale that as Ruskin once wrote “I do not know in all my own country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.”
