Hurst Green lies almost midway between Longridge and Clitheroe in Lancashire in the North of England in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Apart from this picturesque location Hurst Green is possibly more famous because of the nearby school Stonyhurst – a co-ed boarding and day school who possibly most famous pupil was JRR Tolkien. It is said that Tolkiens inspiration for Hobbiton, where Frodo and Bilbo lived came from the area surrounding Hurst Green. Stonyhurst College was founded in the 16th century and today is a thriving centre of educational excellence that can boast links to St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Containing the Latin text of St John’s gospel the St Cuthberts Gospel was at one time on display here at the college but is today to be found at the British Library where it has been on loan since the 1970’s by the college. If you happen to be in the area then a visit to this truly beautiful building set in its own superb gardens is worth the effort and is sure not to disappoint. For those that enjoy walking then the area around Hurst Green is worth exploring with the river close by a summers walk along the Ribble Way is sure to delight.
