The market town of Garstang, half-way between Preston and Lancaster, is well worth the short detour from the A6. Garstang is a crossroads town. It was on the old Great North West Highway from London to Edinburgh that dates back to Roman times. It was a significant stopping place on the Viking route between Dublin and York (underlined by the major Viking hoard found at nearby Claughton). Lord Derby, whose Greenhalgh castle, now in ruins, can still be seen over the Wyre, was given the town by Henry VII. He secured its position by building a bridge across the river. The Lancaster canal runs by the town. And still in modern times the main west coast railway line passes through it, as does the Wyre Way walk between Morecombe and the Forest of Bowland. There has been a market in Garstang since 1310, and still every Thursday the town is the trading centre for the Fylde and Wyredale. Although cotton was important here, unlike many Lancashire towns Garstang retains much pre-Victorian architecture. The old market cross and the narrow High Street (lined by many welcoming inns) hark back to earlier centuries. There is great civic pride in Garstang, best shown perhaps by its regular participation in the Britain in Bloom competition, in which it has won many honours. The town was given its charter of incorporation by Charles II, but is not content just to rely on the past – in 2000 it became the world’s first Fair Trade Town.
