Forton is to be found a few miles from the coast, close to the Forest of Bowland in the North of England in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Reference to Forton is to be found in the Domesday Book when the lands were owned by the local wealthy family until the mid 17th century when it was all sold off to tenant farmers. The late 18th century and 19th century were to change the way of life as the canal, road and rail network started stretching across the country. Today thousands of motorists on the M6 pass the distinctive Pennine Tower of the Forton service station which was built in the mid 1960’s between junctions 32 and 33. The village of Forton itself though still remains much as it was, it is only relatively recently that the village has grown. The church in Forton was built in the early part of the 19th century and it was funded by a local mill owner George Fishwick and is still the focal point of village life today, while some of the buildings date back to the 18th century.
