For those who regularly travel the M6 north of Manchester then Charnock Richard is probably best known as a motorway service station, however there is more than that to Charnock Richard which is in the county of Lancashire and close to Chorley. It lies on the principal road between Wigan and Preston and was an important part of the railway route. It was in the 10th century that Park Hall was built and in the 13th century a local landowner named the location as Charnock Richard to distinguish it from nearby Heath Charnock. Today Park Hall is famous as being adjacent to one of the country’s leading theme parks – the Camelot Theme Park – based on Arthurian legend and which attracts many visitors each year. The motorway traveller today though will have use of the service station, one of the few in the country to have a bridge restaurant however Charnock Richard also has a place in the Guiness Book of Records – in 1987 the worst traffic jam in the UK was recorded as stretching from Charnock Richard to Carnforth involving some 200,000 people and 50,000 vehicles!
