Catterall is located in the North West of England just South of its larger neighbour, Garstang in the County of Lancashire. Originally referred to in the Domesday Book as Caterhala it’s name underwent a number of changes before becoming Catterall as it is known today. In its time Catterall was an industrious area, the River Calder runs close to the village and the inhabitants of Catterall used this to power the printing mills and worsted mills in the area. Boots and clogs were also made and sold locally, because of the river the land around it was particularly suited to dairy and livestock farming. The Preston to Kendal Canal goes through Catterall and the aqueduct under which the River Calder is siphoned was designed by world famous architect John Rennie (1761-1821 and who is buried at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Today Catterall is a small village nestling between the A6, Preston Lancaster New Road, and the B6430, Garstang Road with a sense of community, a post office and shops. Local residents enjoy the quality of life that this village offers and it is easy to understand why, nestling in the countryside with relatively easy access to the road and rail network.
