Burnley is to be found in the North West of England in an area known as East Lancashire and was at one time producing a greater length of cotton cloth that any other in the world. It all started around 1296 when a fulling mill was built on the banks of the River Brun. Fulfilling is a process of cleansing, shrinking and thickening the cloth by moisture, heat and pressure, this process effectively cleans and thickens the cloth. The 18th century was of great importance to Burnley, firstly was the introduction of worsted manufacture and by the end of the century Burnley was an important centre for worsted cloth. Then in the second half of the 18th century the manufacture of cotton began to replace that of wool and the Industrial Revolution had brought mechanisation to what had been a cottage industry. This industrial development required more manpower and records show that the population in Burnley in 1801 was around 4000 – by 1851 the population had increased to 21,000. In 1850 there were some 9,000 looms in the town and by 1900 Burnley had 79,000 looms. Together with the cotton and wool mills there were corn mills, iron and brass foundries, machinery works and other industries working in and around the town. The early part of the 20th Century started well for Burnley but by the mid 30’s mass unemployment was starting to hit the town and the increased use of man made material dealt a further blow to the town’s prosperity. Today Burnley has only a handful of firms producing textiles. The mills and looms of yesterday may have now gone but these have been replaced by new purpose built industry and technology parks together with new modern upmarket housing developments. The Leeds Liverpool canal that once brought and took goods to the town is now a feature of the area with tourist barges and ramblers. Good road and rail links mean that access to the town of Burnley is excellent, the manor homes of yesterday attract more tourists to Towneley Hall and Gawthorpe Hall whilst the Charter Shopping Centre in the town centre provides a myriad of stores whilst Burnley still enjoys a traditional market.
