The village of Austwick is to be found in the Yorkshire Dales National Park close to the larger towns of Ingleton and Settle and lying in the shadow of the Three Peaks. The area consists of rolling limestone hills and is popular with geologists, cavers and walkers who all visit the area to explore the fascinating countryside. For those who enjoy geology the added attraction of the area is a group of boulders that was deposited by the retreating Crummackdale Glacier at the end of the last Ice Age. The Ice Age cut the surrounding valleys and created the low rounded hills which are seen to a lesser extent in other areas of Britain. It is believed that people first settled in the area some 4000 years ago as local archaeology has unearthed findings that date back to the Bronze Age, a prehistoric burial cave found at Felzor Nick and a “bog burial” in Austwick Bog all confirm that this area was settled from an early part of history. Due to the unique geology of the area slate quarrying was being carried out in the area as early as 1200 but this gave way to textile weaving (initially wool and then cotton) and agriculture and it was to these industries that the village relied on for income. Today with the nearest railway station at Clapham, some 2 miles away, Austwick offers its visitors numerous spectacular walks and interesting places to visit and makes an ideal base from which to explore the region.
