Accrington is to be found in the North West of England lying almost equidistant between Blackburn and Bury. As a town it was nothing more than a settlement although there was some coal mining undertaken around the area in the late 1300’s. Accrington was a town that had water and damp weather, neither likely to encourage economic growth. The advent of the Industrial Revolution however would help Accrington’s economic growth. By the mid-18th century many people were employed in the woollen industry, but within a matter of years they switched to cotton and Accrington was the ideal location. By 1849 there were eight mills in Accrington and the increase in population as people flocked to the area to work in the factories created a housing boom. The textile industry was the main employer but the textile industry declined in the mid 20th century in the face of cheaper foreign textile imports. Accrington though has enjoyed its moments of fame and famous people – their unforgettable football team – Accrington Stanley – one of the original founders of the football league and their appearance in a TV advert for milk, famous past residents include Jon Anderson of 1970’s supergroup Yes, John Tomlinson a famous opera singer as well as authoress Jeanette Winterson. Most famous of all though must surely be comedian Jim Bowen of that infamous TV quiz show Bullseye.
