Stalham, whose name it is said means settlement by the river, in this case the Ant, is one of the great Broads bases, with three major boatyards located there spread over an area of some 20 acres. It is fitting that the Museum of the Broads is located in the town. Public moorings are available free for 24 hours at Stalham Staithe, and there are others at the various boatyards. The town is on the pretty A149 coast road halfway between Yarmouth and Cromer, although at this point the coast is three miles distant. Sea Palling, Eccles, and Happisburgh (pronounced Haysbro) beaches are worth the detour if the opportunity arises. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, the town has been an agricultural centre for centuries, although with mechanisation the employment agriculture provides is limited these days. A market town for the area, Stalham these days boasts farmers’ markets twice a month, and visitors can in the right season get closer still to the source of their food at the various PYO farms in the district. The most notable buildings in the town are St Mary’s church, built in the 15th century in the perpendicular style; Stalham Hall, a fine Jacobean manor house, and the recently restored Old Fire Station, a grade II listed building put up in 1833 that may be the second oldest fire station in the country. Outside the town, by the Ant, stands the lovely Hunsett Mill, and close by are the ruins of a leper chapel.
