Sculthorpe is a North Norfolk village of fewer than 1000 inhabitants. About three miles northwest of Fakenham, it is set in pleasant and decidedly green countryside dominated by the River Wensum. The village is just off the B1355 leading to Burnham Market and the coast, the parallel B1105 taking you to Wells-next-the-Sea. The two most notable buildings in Sculthorpe are its ancient church, of typical Norfolk style and solidity, and the fine 18th century mill on the Wensum (in past times there were several here), now a pub and restaurant with some of the loveliest river frontage you could care to find. Near the village there is Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve, run by the Hawk and Owl Trust, preserving the Wensum Valley habitat which includes rare sedge wetland, a good place to spot marsh harriers, kingfishers, barn owls and willow tits among other species. To the west of the settlement is RAF Sculthorpe, now very much scaled-back from its glory days in WWII and the Cold War era. The base is still operational as a training facility, though major sections have been sold off – one area previously used by the USAF having metamorphosed into the village of Wicken Green.
