The seaside village of Overstrand, a couple of miles east of Cromer, still retains the elegance of its golden years in the Edwardian era, when it was known as The Village of Millionaires. Overstrand shot to prominence through the writings of theatre critic and playwright Clement Scott, who christened the area Poppyland after a visit in 1883, when happenstance led him to stay with miller Alfred Jermy and his daughter Louie. Scott’s stories of this idyllic poppy-brightened corner of Norfolk caught the imagination of the metropolitan wealthy. Within a few years the tiny fishing village (crabs are still landed there today) sprouted a series of elegant houses of the rich and famous. Lady Battersea, a Rothschild, had The Pleasaunce built there: designed by Lutyens (who also designed the Methodist chapel nearby), and with gardens laid by Gertrude Jekyll, it was the epitome of Edwardian style. Financier Sir Edgar Speye constructed Sea Marge on the cliff tops, a mock-Tudor mansion set in extensive gardens, now an elegant country-house hotel. Winston Churchill stayed in the village as a boy, his father owning Pear Tree Cottage there. This is a place for old-fashioned seaside holidays, with extensive sandy beaches (reached by a steep clamber from the village above – Overstrand of course meaning above the beach) and no amusement arcades. The village has the basic shopping facilities and pubs that no gentlemanly destination should be without, set in neat surroundings with plenty of Norfolk flint walling to complete the scene
