The large Broadland village of Marsham is ideally sited as a base for exploring the north eastern quadrant of Norfolk. Sitting on the A140 Norwich to Cromer road roughly midway between those two place, Marsham is easy to access, with a choice of routes taking visitors to the wonderful Norfolk coast, many Broads villages in easy reach, and the beautifully preserved medieval city of Norwich just ten or so miles to the south. Another reason to visit the village is the Mermaid, the name of the tributary of the Bure on which the village lies. Surely the name alone is worth a trip? Within the village there is a quaint 14th century church, All Saints, noted for its ornate font, and a village inn, the Plough, so the soul and the stomach are both provided for here. The church was once in the gift of the Mercers’ Company, which reflects the importance it once had as a textile centre, though once the days of handlooms were past it declined in that sphere. Just two miles north of Marsham is the market town of Aylsham, one of Norfolk’s finest, with plenty of reminders of its medieval heyday, when like Marsham it was a significant textile town. Norfolk of course has many attractions, two near to Marsham being the magnificent Tudor Blickling Hall, and by way of contrast the Bure Valley Railway, the stop at Brampton just a mile or two east of the village. This narrow gauge line is a great way of enjoying the Bure countryside without getting blisters or needing the car.
