Sited seven miles from the sea, Holt has swapped its market for a bevy of antique and curio shops, restaurants and delicatessens. If Burnham is Chelsea-on-Sea, Holt serves as the Fulham of North Norfolk. The town is predominantly Georgian, thanks to the huge fire of May 1 1708 that wiped away a lot of the ancient buildings. It is mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and there has been a church on the site near the market place for over 900 years, although the current St Andrew the Apostle dates from the 14th century. Even in those distant days Holt was the slightly poorer cousin of its coastal neighbours, the church being less grandiose than those at Cromer and Blakeney for instance, but it has a delightfully elegant tree-lined path through the churchyard to the tower entrance. The Georgian architecture of the town is best seen around the market place, with white-washed, pink-washed and sage-green buildings showng the typical eyebrow windows of the style. In the market place too is an impressive cross. Perhaps the town’s main claim to fame is Gresham’s, the school founded in 1555 by Sir John Gresham. Later to become a Lord Mayor of London. The school boasts artistic alumni WH Auden (with a theatre named for him there), Benjamin Britten, and Sir Peter Hall. Another highlight is the county’s last working watermill, on the Glaven, where demonstrations of flour milling can be witnessed. To view the lovely wooded countryside around Holt an attractive option is the North Norfolk Railway, starting from the modest little station at Holt, with just under 11 miles of line for the preserved steam trains to travel on. This is known as the Poppy Line, but in the spring might just as well be called the Primrose Line. And when the ornament of those different flowers has gone in the winter Holt decorates itself, with a magical display of Christmas fairy lights that people travel many miles to see.
