Situated at the eastern tip of the country, Great Yarmouth is best approached via the five miles of the A47 “Acle Straight”, with the town slowly coming into view framed by the expanse of Breydon Water. One of the most popular seaside resorts in England, Great Yarmouth has a lot to offer beyond the Golden Mile of the promenade, beach and piers. After years when the amusement arcade was king, attention has now been paid to the architecture and heritage of the area, including the quays from Hall Quay opposite the Haven Bridge over the Yare, down North Quay, restored and tidied to give an elegant prospect today. Hints of medieval Yarmouth can be seen all over, with sections of town wall remaining, and the North West and Blackfriars towers. The Tollhouse dungeons in Middlegate Street can be visited to get a feel for the darker side of those times. And there are a few of the original 145 rows, streets so narrow that a law was passed making it illegal to have outward opening front doors there. Broad Row is still a busy shopping street – if this was broad, think of the narrow ones! Yarmouth was an economically important town for centuries, and has a historical claim to fame: the house at No. 4 South Quay is reputedly where the main Parliamentary figures decided Charles I’s fate. Herrings were Yarmouth’s fortune for centuries, a fact reflected in the town’s coat of arms showing three figures half lion and half herring-tail. Where once fishing boats packed the river so densely it could be crossed on foot, few remain, but Yarmouth Bloaters (cold smoked ungutted herring) and Red Herring are still made here, and a medieval salt barn can be seen on the south side of the river.
