The West Norfolk village of Fincham sits on the A1122 roughly halfway between the pleasant market towns of Downham Market and Swaffham, with historic King's Lynn about 10 miles to the north. Though the fascinating if slightly eerie fens are only a short drive away, Fincham is set in the gently rolling countryside that gives the lie to Noel Coward's jibe "Very flat, Norfolk." In easy reach of the village there are the remains of the motte and bailey Wormegay Castle a mile or so to the north, and south east those interested in history can venture further back at the reconstructed Iceni Village in Cockley Cley. Fincham though has its own interests for the visitor, with the holy trinity of the English village all present: church, pub and shop. The church of St Martin (there used to be a second, St Michael's, but it was demolished in the 18th century having fallen into decay) is a charming 15th century building, complete with a fine array of gargoyles, but its great treasure is the imposing square font (probably Norman) that predates the building, and is thought to have been brought from St Michael's. With a village pond complete with requisite ducks, and not just one 'big house' but three - Talbot Hall is medieval, Fincham Hall is Tudor, and Playters Hall somewhat later - the place repays a stroll along its long street, with the prospect of a refreshing pint at the local hotel or the village pub when your curiosity has been satisfied.
