Docking is a pretty village in the north western corner of Norfolk, one of the highest points in the county, though as Beacon Hill over near West Runton is the highest at 105m above sea level, climbing boots will not be strictly necessary here. Because of the elevation of the village it had problems for years with the supply of drinking water, though in modern times a water tower has overcome that natural defect. Six roads converge on Docking from Heacham on the Wash to the west; Brancaster Bay to the north, and other hamlets and villages from all over this unspoiled corner of North Norfolk. This is great country for those who like beaches and birding, with Hunstanton and Brancaster only a few miles away for the former, and plenty of nature reserves within easy striking distance for the latter, including the marvellous Blakeney Point, though anywhere on the coast will afford opportunities to spot the seabirds for which the region is famous. Docking is also a good centre for touring the historic sites of North Norfolk: Holkham Hall is a short trip along the B1155; Branodonum from an earlier era closer still up the B1153, and Sandringham seven or eight miles southwest. For those who fancy getting away from the car and walking Peddar’s Way passes just three miles to the west of the village. Within Docking itself there is of course a village church of great antiquity, this being Norfolk, where the wool merchants and sea traders tried to buy their way to heaven by financing fine places of worship. The church of St Mary the Virgin has a 14th-century chancel and a tower from the early part of the 15th, but there are elements from earlier periods, including a Norman pillar in the nave. For the more practical demands of life the village also offers a pub, a post office and shop, and even a chippie and a restaurant.
