Blakeney, on the pretty A149 coast road, is picture postcard Norfolk, from the narrow streets with whitewashed cottages and flint-cobble walls, to the 1930s Blakeney Hotel, and the medieval guild hall in the High Street. These days you are as likely to hear a genteel London accent in the village as broad Norfolk. Attracted by the beautiful flint faced cottages, the sheltered sailing for small boats, and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is Blakeney Point, many wealthy people retire to this North Norfolk haven, or have bought a fisherman’s cottage for the weekend. The west tower of the fourteenth century church of St Nicholas rises high above the village, testament to the time when Blakeney was an important fishing town (St Nicholas is patron saint of fishermen). The Glaven estuary silted up long ago, leaving the waters to dinghies and smaller fishing boats. The dinghies find shelter behind Blakeney Point, sailing a shallow channel to the deeper water of The Pit. The area is well-known for seafood, and there are plenty of good eating places in the locality making the most of this bounty. Blakeney Point nature reserve, owned by the National Trust, teams with bird life. There are Terns in particular, plus grey and common seals. The point is walkable (via Cley to the east), but it’s a hike, and there are boat trips there for tamer souls.
