In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty two miles south east of Cromer lies Aylmerton, a village sheltering in a little valley, surrounded by woods and open fields in countryside that gives the lie to Noel Coward’s “very flat, Norfolk”. There is evidence of Stone Age habitation and a Roman camp on the National Trust heath land close to the village. The fifteenth century church of St John the Baptist stands on the slope to the north of the village. With architecture typical of Norfolk’s medieval churches, St John’s has a round tower said to be 700 years old. Inside can be found a screen from 1500, and bench ends made four hundred years ago, with the poppies that grow so freely in the area carved elaborately in them (Poppyland, the area “discovered” by Clement Scott at the end of the nineteenth century, is just three miles east of the village). At the crossroads just a mile south of Aylmerton there is a restored stone cross, beautiful in its simplicity, believed to have been a way marker for pilgrims on the road to Walsingham.
