The riverside city of Kilkenny is one of the most fascinating in south-east Ireland with its unique blend of the old and the new. Situated on the River Nore, Kilkenny is a wonderfully preserved medieval city dominated by a spectacular 13th Century castle. Visitors may admire the rooms and art exhibitions inside the castle, explore its beautiful, formal grounds, including a famous rose garden, or take in one of the summer's varied open-air concerts. The city's other great historic landmark, dating back to the same era, is the Gothic-styled St Canice's Cathedral, which stands beside a particularly fine 9th Century round tower. Parts of the ancient city walls are still standing. Kilkenny is a place that likes to observe tradition, in its pubs and music and festivals and age-old crafts such as pottery and glass-blowing. The St Francis Abbey Brewery, still working in the city centre, is around 300 years old. At the same time, Kilkenny boasts many contemporary bars, restaurants, clubs, live music venues, theatres and shops, from boutiques to specialist studios and high-street chains. For golfers, Kilkenny has an 18-hole course. And nature-lovers are within easy reach of Jenkinstown Park, with its forest trails and herds of deer, and Newpark Fen, a rich wildlife reserve.
